While you play, international soccer commentators John Motson, Des Lynam, and Andy Gray provide play-by-play and color commentary. All of the players on the field are realistic as well, thanks to new Motion Blending technology, a combination of motion capture technology and rendering tools that allows the players to look more natural and have fluid movements. Multi-colored goalie jerseys and numbers embossed on the back of the uniforms are only a couple of graphical touches that heighten the true to life nature of the game. FIFA 98 is a good soccer game with three unfortunate problems: Shoddy framerate, some AI glitches, and Konami's ISS64. The awesome sound, multiplayer gameplay, and FIFA license make FIFA 98 a good buy for soccer enthusiasts -- but only if they already own ISS64. Others, especially sticklers for a steady framerate and fast-paced sports will definitely want to rent it first. But what ever you do, hook it up to a surround sound system and remind your three best buddies to stop by with their controllers.

FIFA '99 is the next in line for EA Sports' soccer franchise, having been released a short five months after the debut of World Cup '98 on the PlayStation. It almost seems as if Electronic Arts is cashing in its FIFA license as much as possible, but playing the '99 edition and you'll see why this game is the soccer game to have.

Ah, the game of football (soccer to you Americans who already have your own version of football ... although oddly enough the ball doesn't actually touch the foot much in your version). "The second most important thing in life," as they say here on the "Old Continent." Millions of people loving the game with their hearts and souls, cheering for their team; happy when they win, sad when they lose. Yes, people occasionally get in fights over decades old sports rivalries, but try telling some guy in Catalonia that Real Madrid is the best Spanish club, or that Inter is the best club in Milan...

As far as the world of football simulations goes, EA Sports has the undisputed heavy weight champ in their corner. The FIFA football series is by far the best one on the market, and there hasn't been any serious contenders to the crown yet.

FIFA 2001: Major League Soccer aims to immerse its fans with the most realistic football experience possible. Over 50 international teams, including England, France, Germany, Holland, Spain, and the United States have made the cut, while 17 of the planet's top leagues have been incorporated as well. New motion captured moves from Matthaus, Mendieta, Scholes, and other soccer legends support the game's realism, with animated linesman and authentic light sourcing add that much more to the presentation. Perhaps the most important features, though, are the advanced sets of artificial intelligence, in-game cinematic cutscenes, and a ton of game modes that have been specially built for tournaments from around the world.
